The Investigative Police (PDI) of Concepción confirmed the arrest of C.A.L.M, a 39-year-old Chilean citizen, as the alleged material author of one of the most serious forest fires that occurred over the weekend in the Biobío region.

This disaster has claimed the lives of at least 20 people in the commune of Penco and one in Tomé.

According to the investigation, the fire is believed to have started accidentally while the detainee was handling a faulty wood-burning stove in the Trinitarias sector of Concepción. The Regional Prosecutor of Biobío, Marcela Cartagena, highlighted the "silent and scientific" work of the PDI in achieving the suspect's arrest for the crime of forest fire.

Prosecutor Cartagena announced that the detention hearing for the individual is scheduled for today at the Concepción Guarantee Court, where more details about the arrest and the evidence incriminating the accused will be revealed. The press will have access to this information during the hearing.

The PDI, in collaboration with the Prosecutor's Office, indicated that more background information on the case will be provided in the coming hours.

Although not all details have been disclosed, authorities assure they have sufficient evidence to prove the detainee's responsibility for the tragic event.

This case has shocked the local community and highlighted the importance of prevention and the proper handling of tools that can generate fire, especially during periods of high forest fire risk.
