Carabineros from the Marga Marga Forest Patrol arrested a person who allegedly caused a forest fire, accidentally, in the Cajón de San Pedro sector.
The arrested person is an adult man who was performing cutting work with an electric grinder in San Pedro when, in a moment of carelessness, the sparks generated by the tool fell onto an adjacent plot with dry grassland. It was in this manner that the fire and subsequent forest fire started.
The Chief of the Marga Marga Forest Patrol, Second Sergeant Carlos Aguayo, reported: "(The detainee), moments before, while repairing metal railings of a bridge in the sector and using an electric grinder without safety measures, in a moment of carelessness, said sparks fell onto the dry grassland of an adjacent plot, starting a forest fire, which affected approximately 800 square meters of grassland, caused the destruction of a 4-meter by 2-meter wooden shed, and undetermined damage to irrigation hoses present at the location."
With this background, the police officers arrested the worker and took him to the Las Cruzadas Tenencia in San Pedro. The on-duty prosecutor instructed that the apprehended man be placed under detention control at the Quillota Guarantee Court and that the confiscated electric grinder be sent in custody to the prosecution's storage facilities.
Regarding the development of the emergency, the commander of the Quillota Fire Department, Marco Velásquez Godoy, reported: "Two Fire Department units were dispatched in the San Pedro district, on Estadio Street, for a forest fire. The captain of the Fourth Company was in charge of the emergency, who reports to the central command of burning grassland scrub with rapid advance, where work was also carried out alongside Conaf personnel."
Commander Marco Velásquez added that no injured firefighters or civilians were reported.
