After unknown individuals threatened with gunshots two Forestal Arauco firefighting crews while they were combating a fire in Curanilahue, the presidential delegation stated they have identified two groups carrying out these acts, aiming to steal timber to sell as firewood.
Recall that while fighting a fire on the Plegarias property in the commune, the firefighters heard gunshots, which they interpreted as threats from unknown persons. This forced them to retreat to a safe location and stop fighting the flames.
When asked about it, the acting presidential delegate, Humberto Toro, stated that this is not the first time such incidents have occurred in the area, adding that it appears to be a new form of crime emerging in the Arauco province. However, he said they will locate the antisocial individuals.
Investigation into Threats in Curanilahue
Meanwhile, the Regional Minister of Security for Bío Bío, Paulina Stuardo, confirmed the events, pointing out that after speaking with the head of National Defense amid the state of exception in effect in the area, it was agreed to mobilize the Navy to the location to gather background information.
She added that there were first reports of gunshots and, subsequently, of threats, which must be clarified by the corresponding investigation.
"This worries us; it is not the first time we have received a report of this nature," she noted.
Call from Other Organizations
The Regional Governor Sergio Giacaman, for his part, called on the Government to assume its security role, as these groups—which he labeled as terrorist—carry out these acts in the midst of the wildfire season.
Finally, the Chilean Wood Corporation also condemned these events; while Forestal Arauco announced legal actions to bring those responsible to justice.
