Following its presentation to the Productive Development Commission and subsequently to the Full Council of the Regional Government of Aysén, the funding for the program "Transfer of Sustainable Management of Forest Ecosystems with a Focus on Preventive Silviculture in the Aysén Region" was unanimously approved. This initiative will have an investment of M$7,570,442 from the National Regional Development Fund (FNDR) and will be executed by the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf) Aysén over a period of 24 months.
The program is part of a line of work that the National Forestry Corporation develops in the region, with experience in forest management, ecological restoration, and preventive silviculture actions aimed at reducing environmental risks and strengthening ecosystems.
The regional director of Conaf Aysén, Ronald Valenzuela Campos, valued the approval of the program and highlighted the impact it will have for the region.
"We are very pleased because the Council approved this sustainable management program for the Aysén Region for a period of 24 months. This timeframe allows us to work more efficiently and with greater reach to meet objectives related to sustainable management and the provision of forest products to more vulnerable groups," he stated.
Furthermore, he indicated that "the program seeks to strengthen the planning and sustainable management of forest resources through conservation actions, silvicultural management, ecological restoration, and reduction of forest fire risk. It also aligns with the National Strategy on Climate Change and Vegetation Resources (ENCCRV), focused on mitigation and adaptation to climate change."
The initiative considers a territorial and social focus, generating direct and indirect local employment, in addition to providing high social value goods such as timber, firewood, and other inputs primarily intended for nearby communities and vulnerable groups. In total, it is estimated that around 60 thousand inhabitants will benefit through the mitigation of environmental threats, while more than 6 thousand people will receive tangible benefits derived from the program.
The actions will be developed in five strategic intervention areas, including state-owned properties managed by Conaf and protected wilderness areas of high ecological value, such as Patagonia National Park (Jeinimeni sector) and Coyhaique National Reserve, in addition to forest sectors in Cochrane, Villa Mañihuales, and the El Mallín nursery in Puerto Aysén.
The initiative aims to increase the resilience of forest ecosystems, reduce environmental risks, and strengthen the protection of communities and territories against threats such as fires and environmental degradation, to contribute to the well-being and security of the population of the Aysén Region.
