In an abbreviated trial, the Guarantee Court of Loncoche - in the La Araucanía region - convicted Mapuche leader Mijael Carbone Queipul and three other individuals accused by the Public Prosecutor's Office as perpetrators of the crimes of illicit association, timber theft, and tax evasion.

The latter, after he acknowledged the facts in the investigation file of the Public Prosecutor's Office.

The information was confirmed to La Radio by the chief prosecutor of Lautaro, Miguel Ángel Velásquez, stating that "a guilty verdict was issued in the abbreviated procedure regarding him and three other defendants."

Defense attorney Manuela Royo, the lawyer representing the Mapuche leader, also commented on this conviction, asserting that the process "also speaks to the possibility of reaching a sentence that, we believe, should be the fairest."

The werkén of the traditional community of Temucuicui, who was arrested in December 2022 in a PDI operation, was accused of leading an organization dedicated to timber theft from various forestry estates.

The sentence to be received by the Mapuche leader, Mijael Carbone Queipul, and the other three defendants cannot exceed 5 years of imprisonment, and the court must determine if there are sufficient grounds for them to serve it under conditional release.

The sentencing hearing, where the penalty to be served by the four convicted individuals will be announced, was scheduled for Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
