The Municipal Council of Paillaco gave unanimous support to initiatives aimed at strengthening the secondary wood industry promoted under the "Impulso Madera Los Ríos" project, consolidating a cross-cutting political signal in favor of the productive development of the commune.

That willingness began to take shape in April and was recorded in the minutes of a session held in April, after learning of the report from the Productive Development Commission, chaired by councilwoman Fabiola Soto García.

Since then, the Council unanimously agreed to "support all initiatives to promote the secondary wood industry" in the commune, something highlighted by one of the proponents of the proposal, Carlos Aravena Lobos, who explained the importance of incorporating wood into Paillaco's future development strategy, "moving from the regional availability of forest resources toward activities with greater added value, technological innovation, advanced manufacturing, and industrialized construction."

ADDING VALUE

The support of Paillaco's authorities takes on special relevance considering Los Ríos' forest base, and that decision aligns with the Los Ríos Regional Development Strategy 2023–2037, which expressly identifies the high-value forest and wood industry among the region's productive bets.

"The update of CONAF's Vegetation Resources and Land Use Registry determined that 63.4% of the regional territory is covered by forest ecosystems. This represents 1,163,546 hectares: 938,459 of native forest, 214,237 of plantations, and 10,824 of mixed forest. Native forest alone covers 51.1% of the regional surface," said Aravena.

And he added that significant industrial activity is added to this territorial availability. "According to the Forest Institute, Los Ríos produced 521,700 cubic meters of sawn wood during 2024 and recorded 2,101 people directly employed in the primary forest industry."

And he stressed that the region also has capabilities in secondary manufacturing. "The latest specific INFOR study counted 54 factories and 686 jobs linked to the doors, windows, and moldings segments during 2022. Los Ríos was also the country's leading region in wooden window production, concentrating 37.9% of national output."

"These background facts show that the regional challenge is not only about producing more wood, but about transforming an increasing proportion of it into building components, industrialized housing, doors, windows, furniture, engineering solutions, and other products with greater technological content," he highlighted.
