  • Meanwhile, forestry contractors reported a 63% reduction in violence, dropping from 104 attacks in 2022 to 38 in 2023.

The government reported that arson attacks on infrastructure in Arauco Province decreased by 24% this year compared to last year and the entire period since 2020.

According to information from theArauco Provincial Delegation, although arson incidents have occurred in the area this year, primarily affecting properties, these actions carried out by criminals—who seek to appropriate the Mapuche cause—have decreased compared to the period between 2020 and 2022.

Data fromCarabinerosshows that this year, 34 arson attacks on infrastructure have been recorded in the southern cone of the Biobío region, representing a 24% decrease from last year (47 by December) and a 55% drop from 2021 (75 incidents).

The Presidential Delegate of Arauco, Humberto Toro, stated that all entities, both police and civilian, have worked collaboratively.

This effort aims to address provincial security with concrete measures. As a result, actions taken by Carabineros, the Investigative Police, and Jedena have helped reduce crime rates.

Toro also affirmed that this decline in incidents has enabled the execution of various projects in the province, and the Ministry of Public Works has already announced plans for an investment of nearly 72 billion pesos in the southern cone of Biobío in 2024.

Similarly, the Association of Forestry Contractors recently acknowledged improved outcomes regarding terrorist violence in the Southern Macrozone.

The association attributes this to the timber theft law and the renewal of over 36 states of exception in the Biobío and La Araucanía regions.

They also recognize increased logistical support in technology and equipment for the police, as well as more resources for regional prosecutors and the arrest of leaders of subversive groups.

Finally, forestry contractors report a 63% reduction in violence, dropping from 104 attacks in 2022 to 38 this year.
