Governor of La Araucanía Supports Continuation of State of Emergency One Year After Its Implementation
The Governor of La Araucanía, Luciano Rivas, insisted on maintaining the State of Emergency in the Southern Macrozone just weeks before the controversial measure reaches its one-year mark.
On May 17, it will be 12 months since the Constitutional State of Emergency began in the provinces of Arauco and Bío Bío, as well as Malleco.
When asked by Radio Bío Bío, the governor of La Araucanía, Luciano Rivas, stated that considering the positive results acknowledged by the government itself, it is necessary to maintain the measure, even if it no longer seems exceptional.
With the measure in place, the Chief of National Defense has been leading the coordination of military and police forces and their deployment in the territory.
The current officeholder, General Ricardo Stangher, declined to speak with La Radio, but the Commander of the 8th Tucapel Mountain Detachment, Felipe Videla, did.
In this regard, the officer stated that it is up to the political authority to decide whether maintaining the measure is necessary or not.
These statements were made during the official raising of the bicentennial flag, marking 200 years of the Tucapel No. 8 Mountain Detachment in Temuco.
This Monday, the Chamber approved, by 113 votes in favor, 23 against, and 7 abstentions, the extension of the State of Emergency in the Southern Macrozone for another 15 days.
