“We have reaffirmed our commitment to the struggle and unity to continue advancing toward Mapuche national liberation, strengthening territorial control, and intensifying sabotage against the state and companies that destroy the itrfil mongen and Mapuche life,” states a document released this Tuesday and, unprecedentedly, jointly signed by the groups Weichan Auka Mapu (WAM), the Mapuche Malleco Resistance (RMM), the Mapuche National Liberation Movement (LNM), and the Lavkenche Mapuche Resistance (RML). These groups have different modus operandi and leaders.

What to watch. “In response to the enactment of the Nain-Retamal Law, the undersigned Mapuche organizations declare the following,” begins a statement issued this Tuesday the 11th, broadcast by Radio Kurruf.

The text has an unprecedented element compared to other statements from radical groups operating in the Southern Macrozone, as it is jointly signed by four of them: Weichan Auka Mapu (WAM), the Mapuche Malleco Resistance (RMM), the Mapuche National Liberation Movement (LNM), and the Lavkenche Mapuche Resistance (RML).

The statement. In the text, four radical groups oppose the Nain-Retamal Law and threaten retaliation following the enactment of the bill and its provisions on privileged self-defense for Carabineros, an issue that divided Democratic Socialism and Approve Dignity, which rejected it in the Chamber of Deputies, dealing a blow to Boric.

“We have reaffirmed our commitment to the struggle and unity to continue advancing toward Mapuche national liberation, strengthening territorial control, and intensifying sabotage against the state and companies that destroy the itrfil mongen and Mapuche life,” it states. “We make it clear that in response to the legal shield that winka laws have given cops to kill indiscriminately, our weichafe will also exercise the right to Mapuche self-defense.”

The radical organizations, in turn, expressed strong support for Luis Tranamil, charged with the homicide of Corporal Eugenio Nain on October 30, 2020. The text notes that oral trial preparations will begin in May. Nain was shot in the chest, dying from a “penetrating thoracic wound complicated by lung injury,” according to the prosecution’s indictment. He was posthumously promoted to Senior Non-Commissioned Officer. Tranamil was apprehended after a police operation on March 10, 2021, in the Alto Metrenco sector, in the José Jineo community, Padre de las Casas municipality.

He is the brother of machi Fidel Tranamil, who in 2017 was identified by Carabineros as the leader of the radical group Weichan Auka Mapu (WAM). Fidel Tranamil was dismissed in 2018 from charges of terrorist criminal association in the context of the so-called “Operation Hurricane,” which turned out to be a police setup.

His defense maintains his innocence. His name appears on banners found after arson attacks claimed by WAM, demanding his release and labeling him a “Mapuche Political Prisoner.”

Background. These groups have different modus operandi and leaders. However, in August 2022, three radical groups (Lavkenche Mapuche Resistance, Mapuche National Liberation Movement, and Mapuche Malleco Resistance) formed a strategic alliance to oppose President Boric’s “Good Living” plan, which includes increasing CONADI’s budget to buy land, reviving the congressional process for the Ministry of Indigenous Affairs, allocating $400 billion in infrastructure investment for communities in Biobío and La Araucanía, and promoting a dialogue process in the region, among other measures.
