Senate Approves Twentieth Extension of State of Emergency in Southern Macrozone
On Tuesday afternoon, the Senate approved another extension of the constitutional state of emergency in effect in the La Araucanía Region and the provinces of Arauco and Biobío, in the namesake region.
The decision was made with 43 votes in favor, one against, and three abstentions.
Interior Minister Carolina Tohá stated, "We have presented evaluations of the progress made by law enforcement and the Armed Forces. In recent weeks, these evaluations show very positive indicators."
René Muñoz, manager of the Association of Forestry Contractors, said, "We believe the state of emergency is a condition that is here to stay in La Araucanía and the province of Arauco, as long as there is no more intrusive measure that guarantees residents of these regions that armed groups and criminals causing all the damage we've seen will be captured and detained."
This marks the twentieth extension of this measure, which had already been approved by the Lower House this Monday.
Meanwhile, the Presidential Delegate of La Araucanía, José Montalva, inspected the Carabineros units that provide permanent surveillance to properties under special protection.
According to the regional authority, "700 Carabineros officers are stationed at various critical points requested by the Public Ministry, and through a court order, these protective measures have been declared—some only at night, and others around the clock."
"That’s why it’s so important for us as authorities and as the Interior Ministry to be fully informed about the work being done," he added.
