ILO Accepts Complaint from Forestry Contractors Against the State for Violence in the Southern Macrozone
The International Labour Organization (ILO) accepted a complaint from Forestry Contractors against the State for failing to ensure safety and health measures amid arson attacks in the Southern Macrozone.
The workers claim that the government has not provided the necessary security conditions related to violent incidents in parts of the Bío Bío and La Araucanía regions.
Recall that in October 2022, the Forestry Contractors Trade Association (Acoforag) filed a complaint with the ILO, accusing the State of failing to comply with Decree 187 of the international organization's Constitution.
It is worth noting that this document states that worker safety must be safeguarded.
After the complaint was accepted, Acoforag's manager, René Muñoz, stated that he hopes the ILO's resolution will be implemented.
He even asserted that, so far, this decree has not been enforced, as they continue to suffer attacks in their workplaces.
When asked about the situation, the Presidential Delegate in Bío Bío, Daniela Dresdner, claimed that the measures taken by the government in the area have significantly reduced violent incidents.
In this regard, she maintained that this improvement has been reflected among those working in conflict zones, as well as the general population.
The forestry contractors' complaint is supported by nearly 500 arson attacks suffered over the last decade in the so-called Southern Macrozone.
On this matter, the ILO proposed creating a tripartite table to address the issue, including its representatives, victims of arson attacks, and the government.
Finally, the international organization awaits the response from the Chilean State, which should reach Geneva no later than June 11.
