"What are they waiting for to change?": Multiguild of La Araucanía against Government after series of attacks
Directly challenging government authorities, the Multiguild of La Araucanía reacted to the series of violent incidents in the Southern Macrozone, describing Tuesday as "one of the most violent days we have had in the region."
This refers to the shooting attacks targeting the family of recent constitutional advisor Héctor Urban and workers from the Municipality of Victoria, in addition to the burning of trucks recorded early this morning in Purén, among other violent acts.
Through a statement, they indicated that the most serious issue is that these incidents occur in the same locations publicly recognized as high-risk areas, corresponding to the country's main highway, Route 5 South.
These situations—they claim—arise after a "social media call to 'make noise' in Ercilla," all despite the ongoing State of Exception that was extended yesterday in Congress.
The Multiguild accuses an increase in violent incidents since March in the area, lamenting that "once again, Carabineros and innocent civilians are injured or affected, with their lives at risk. Our absolute support and solidarity with them."
Given this, they asked: "Could the authorities responsible for the State of Exception and security not anticipate these events? Are there any detainees? Was there any degree of timely response?" they questioned.
They estimate that while some crimes have decreased in frequency, this has not been the case for arson and armed attacks. "Beyond the numbers, the situation remains deplorable. So, we also ask the political authorities: what measures are being taken to improve the effectiveness of the State of Exception, and what other preventive actions are being implemented to anticipate and prevent? What progress has been made in preventing and dismantling violent groups?"
To conclude, they stated that citizens are clearly demanding greater effectiveness, intensity, and decisiveness. "What are they waiting for to change?" they challenged the Executive.
As usual in these cases, no arrests have been reported so far.
