"Unfortunately, there has been an escalation in the past month regarding arson attacks." That is the analysis provided by Undersecretary of the Interior Manuel Monsalve regarding the situation in the Southern Macrozone.

 

The authority detailed that "everyone has witnessed this—yesterday there was the tower attack in the case of Carahue, there have been arson attacks targeting cabins in the province of Arauco, in the commune of Contulmo."

 

Going over the numbers, Monsalve explained that "there has been a higher number of arson attacks this month compared to the previous one. Last month there were four, this month there have been 14."

 

Along these lines, the undersecretary of the interior further criticized that several of these attacks occurred during the emergency caused by the frontal system.

 

"The government has rejected from the outset any activity related to criminal organizations, but when crimes and offenses occur during a period when the country is facing an emergency, they are even more criminal. From that perspective, as everyone knows, we have deployed—though we can never share the details—a set of state capabilities to protect the security of the regions, to combat violence, and to identify and detain those who engage in criminal activities through various organizations in the Southern Macrozone."

 

He also stated that "precisely for this reason, I want to reiterate that we have strengthened police and military control capabilities in the area. Secondly, I also want to remind that, for this same reason, we have bolstered criminal prosecution capabilities—we have allocated resources to hire 13 additional professionals to support the Prosecutor's Office in the Araucanía region, we have allocated resources to hire 6 more professionals in the Biobío Regional Prosecutor's Office, and we have deployed specialized police investigation teams."
