The trial against José Ancán Díaz began at the Oral Court of Cañete. He was arrested in January along with his sister as the alleged perpetrators of the fire that affected Fundo Yani, owned by Forestal Arauco.

In the case of Maribel Ancán Díaz, she had already been convicted in an abbreviated procedure after admitting responsibility and is currently serving 4 and a half years under supervised release.

However, her brother rejected a similar plea deal and chose to go to trial, risking nearly 15 years in prison, according to the Prosecutor's Office, which charged him with arson, threats against police officers, and receiving a stolen vehicle.

His lawyer, Patricio Robles, explained that his client did not accept the alternative resolution, as he denies any involvement in the attack.

Forestal Arauco is also participating in the trial. Their lawyer, Álvaro Araya, expressed confidence in securing José Ancán's conviction, emphasizing the severity of starting a fire during peak summer.

According to the investigation, on January 21 of this year, the siblings entered the estate located in the commune of Arauco and, using accelerants, started a forest fire, also obstructing the work of firefighters and forest brigades.

José and Maribel Ancán were arrested and held in preventive detention, a measure that remains in place for the male defendant to this day.
