Community Member Convicted for Attack on Forestal Arauco Estate Faces Up to 20 Years in Prison
The Oral Court of Cañete issued a guilty verdict for the crimes of arson and receiving stolen goods against José Ancán Díaz, prosecuted by the Public Ministry as responsible for the attack on the Yani estate, owned by Forestal Arauco.
In the ruling, however, the judges acquitted the community member of a third offense—threatening Carabineros—which had also been charged by the Prosecutor's Office and the plaintiffs, in this case, the Presidential Delegation and the company victimized by the attack.
The penalties Ancán faces range from 8 to 20 years in prison, according to the requests made by the defense, the Public Ministry, and the plaintiffs.
Whatever sentence the Oral Court imposes, which will be announced next January 8, it will be effectively enforced.
According to the investigation, on January 21 of this year, José Ancán, along with a sister who had already been previously convicted, entered the estate located in the commune of Arauco and, using accelerants, started a forest fire, also hindering the work of firefighters and forest brigades.
