Preventive Prison for 5 CAM Members for Attacks in La Araucanía
Five members of the Arauco Malleco Coordinator (CAM), accused of participating in arson attacks on the Vegas de Centenario and La Coña estates in 2021 in the La Araucanía region, were placed under the precautionary measure of preventive prison.
In the Purén Guarantee Court, the individuals were formally charged with the crimes of repeated arson, attempted homicide, kidnapping, illegal possession of weapons, and assault on authority.
During the hearing, Victoria's chief prosecutor, Héctor Leiva, presented audio recordings of phone calls that prove the defendants' involvement in the attacks. One of them details shots fired at Carabineros officers.
The prosecutor explained that the first incident under investigation occurred in 2021 in the Vega de Centenario area of Purén, where there was an arson attack, land usurpation, and an assault on police officers.
The second incident took place in Traiguén, on the La Coña estate, where a property and warehouses were attacked, a worker's house was burned down, and several pieces of machinery were destroyed.
After hearing the arguments, Judge Luis Fernando Pacheco Herrera ordered the preventive imprisonment of the five defendants, considering that their release would pose a danger to society's safety.
These attacks left nine people affected, in addition to significant economic damages due to burned machinery and vehicles.
The use of firearms, including military-grade weapons, was also reported.
The investigation for this case was set for 2 months.
