- In "Conversando con la Acoforag," Ramón Figueroa stated that the wildfire season has left alarming figures and questioned the effectiveness of prevention and firefighting policies.
Chile's wildfire season has ended with a troubling toll: 71,400 hectares burned and a total of 5,589 incidents recorded. These numbers, though lower than the previous season, should not be a cause for celebration but rather for analysis and action, as noted by Ramón Figueroa, president of Corma's Forest Protection Department, during the program "Conversando con la Acoforag."
Compared to the five-year average, the reduction in wildfire occurrence is just 14%, a percentage that does not reflect significant progress in combating this scourge, he stated.
He added that the forestry sector is particularly affected, with over 35,000 hectares lost annually due to various factors, including reduced plantations and territorial conflicts.
Managing the urban-rural interface, the transitional zone between cities and forests, has become a critical point in wildfire prevention. Despite efforts by large forestry companies and protocols from the National Forestry Corporation (CONAF), a proposed new bill shifting wildfire prevention and firefighting responsibility to forest owners has sparked controversy. This measure is seen as an "aberration" by those affected, who consider themselves victims rather than responsible parties for the fires.
