Municipality of Santa Juana Creates Its First Forest Fire Prevention Network
To prevent forest fires, the Municipality of Santa Juana established the first Community Prevention Network, made up of residents from different rural areas of the commune, with the support of the Municipality, the company Arauco, and CMPC.
The first brigade was formed in the Los Quiques sector, where training was also provided for the community.
Some of the main tasks to be carried out include: firebreaks, distribution of cartography protocols, weed clearing, reactivation of different local plans, as well as the use of various supplies and materials provided by forestry companies.
Regarding this matter, Mayor Ángel Castro stated, "We are strongly focused on forest fire prevention. Today, we are working together with the Government and forestry companies, but the most important thing is to involve our neighbors and community leaders. That is why we developed this initiative, which also includes training to form this first community prevention network."
For her part, community leader Karolina Cuevas Sáez expressed gratitude for the opportunity to involve the community in these types of actions.
"As neighbors, we want to help in whatever is necessary because, in the event of a disaster, we are the ones most affected. That situation has already happened—lives were lost, homes destroyed, and our agricultural production ruined. So, we must be prepared," she concluded.
