Concern in the Biobío Region Over Clear Evidence of Intentional Forest Fires
Authorities reported a series of intentional forest fires in the Biobío Region, specifically in the commune of Penco, where unknown individuals started at least four fires along the roadside, at night, and within less than 12 hours.
There is concern regarding the high temperatures expected in the coming days for the area.
Thanks to the work of nighttime brigades, these incidents were contained, preventing a tragedy.
Intentional fires
At least four forest fires were detected by the Forestal Arauco fire control center, all in the commune of Penco and with characteristics that clearly indicate intentionality.
This was stated by the company's Deputy Fire Protection Manager, Ramón Figueroa, who provided details of the four fires occurring in less than 12 hours, some with up to three simultaneous hotspots and near critical infrastructure such as gas stations, highways, and homes.
The mayor of Penco, Rodrigo Vera, condemned these acts.
He added that this situation had already been identified and addressed in meetings with authorities and his counterpart in Tomé.
He also stated that he awaits reports from Carabineros to potentially initiate some form of action and urged residents to report any suspicious activity.
