Former MIR Member Arrested in San Juan de la Costa for Violation of Weapons Law
A new police operation in the rural area of San Juan de la Costa, Osorno province, resulted in the arrest of a suspect for violating the Weapons Law, identified as a former member of the MIR.
In the early hours of Tuesday, around 50 police officers deployed to the Rucapihuel sector in San Juan de la Costa to raid three homes within a property.
As a result of this action, a 69-year-old man with a criminal record was detained. This was confirmed by the acting chief of the Special Police Investigations Brigade (BIPE) of the Southern Macrozone, Subprefect Marcelo Contreras.
Meanwhile, the chief prosecutor of Osorno, María Angélica De Miguel, stated that other pieces of evidence were seized and are under investigation.
The prosecutor clarified that there is no connection between this raid and the operation carried out a few weeks ago in the Loma de la Piedra area. She also mentioned that an alleged firearms training session is being investigated.
As part of the inquiry conducted by the Southern Macrozone BIPE, De Miguel did not provide details about the detainee's identity but confirmed he was a former MIR member who had been residing in the area for some time.
The regional coordinator of the Undersecretariat for Crime Prevention, Patricia Rada, highlighted the use of the Denuncia Seguro (Safe Report) platform in this case.
The arrest follows several months of investigation, prompted by three complaints received by the Prosecutor's Office—two of which originated from the Denuncia Seguro platform—regarding the presence of weapons in the raided property.
It is worth noting that the formal charges will be filed this Wednesday after an extension was requested to gather further evidence and present the charges properly. The Prosecutor's Office stated it will seek preventive detention for the accused.
