Biobío Ensures Good Pellet Supply for the 2025 Season
The Biobío Region reaffirms its position as the main pellet producer in Chile, ensuring a solid supply for the 2025 season. Authorities confirmed this during a visit to the Andes Biopellet plant in Los Ángeles, where they highlighted the sector’s positive outlook and stable supply.
In recent years, pellet consumption has seen steady growth, driven by its efficiency and the pollution reduction plans implemented in various parts of the country. Biobío leads national production, with much of the manufacturing concentrated in the Biobío Province.
According to data from the Chilean Biomass Association (AchBiom), over 220,000 tons of pellets were produced in 2024, with around 70% coming from the region. Additionally, 20% of production is allocated to industrial and institutional consumption, supplying hospitals, buildings, and sports centers.
The Presidential Delegate of Biobío, Javier Fuchslocher, praised the local industry's efforts and the importance of secured supply for the upcoming season. "It’s important to note that the pellet industry is crucial for our Province, especially since, according to the Chilean Biomass Association’s figures, 70% of national production comes from Biobío. Therefore, we not only ensure the pellet supply for our 14 municipalities and the Biobío Region but also guarantee a steady supply for the entire country," he emphasized.
Meanwhile, the Biobío Regional Minister of Energy, Jorge Cáceres, highlighted the region’s installed capacity, stating, "Currently, out of the 57 pellet plants in Chile, 13 are in Biobío, representing 22% of the total. This demonstrates our region’s strategic role in supplying this biofuel, ensuring stable prices and availability for consumers."
From AchBiom, General Manager Daniela Espinoza stated that projections for 2025 are encouraging. "We started the season with a significant pellet stock, reflecting the sector’s investments to ensure supply and provide peace of mind to the public. At the beginning of this season, the stock was 61,000 tons, which suggests a winter without shortages. We also highlight producers’ commitment to continuous improvement to manufacture pellets with the highest quality standards."
Finally, the Operations Deputy Manager of JCE Sawmill and Andes BioPellet, Alvaro Riquelme, stressed the importance of strengthening the distribution chain. "The stock is stable. In our specific case, we have 9,000 tons already produced, ready for commercialization, so I foresee no supply issues. We have enough raw materials, and our machines are operating normally, so for this season, I see no supply problems."
With these figures and projections, the Biobío Region solidifies its position as the epicenter of pellet production in Chile, guaranteeing a stable and reliable supply for the 2025 winter.
