Victims of forest fire in Traiguén denounce insufficient aid from state institutions
Victims of the forest fire that occurred just over a week ago in Traiguén, La Araucanía region, expressed their frustration over the limited aid they have received from state institutions.
Additionally, they are demanding political accountability for the authorization of agricultural burning.
Angrily, members of the Mapuche community Reducción Contreras arrived at the Regional Government building to meet with Governor René Saffirio, seeking assistance due to the complete absence of the State in Traiguén, where a forest fire just over a week ago destroyed around 20 homes.
In the case of the Reducción Contreras community, 10 homes were destroyed, with their spokesperson José Contreras stating that this is the worst disaster they have suffered in their history.
Regarding this meeting, Regional Governor René Saffirio said they are analyzing how they could provide resources to the residents of Traiguén.
On the other hand, residents of the Contreras community expressed their anger over statements allegedly made by the mayor of the commune, Luis Álvarez, who reportedly pointed to community members as the perpetrators of the forest fire.
José Contreras denied this and attributed the origin of the fire to farmers who allegedly failed to extinguish burning spots that remained lit during the afternoon of Saturday, March 22, considering that the conditions for the following day were adverse and an early preventive alert for simultaneous forest fires was in effect.
In this regard, they met with the Presidential Delegate, Eduardo Abdala, to demand political accountability for the case, asserting that the burning of stubble should not have been authorized.
