In the field, often far from cities and under different conditions, 38 park rangers carry out a key task to protect the natural heritage of the Valparaíso Region. Their work was recognized within the framework of National Park Rangers Day, which is commemorated every September 30.
The activity was led by the Valparaíso Regional Minister of Agriculture, Nicolás Prado, who participated in a day organized by the Department of Protected Wild Areas of Conaf Valparaíso.
The meeting was held during the workshop "Challenges and Projections of Protected Areas within the framework of Law 21,600, Conaf-SBAP," an instance that allowed for analysis of the main challenges facing conservation and the projections associated with the implementation of the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Service (SBAP).
Currently, the region has 33 men and five women who carry out their duties in six units: La Campana National Park, Lago Peñuelas National Reserve, El Yali National Reserve, Archipiélago Juan Fernández National Park, Laguna El Peral Nature Sanctuary, and Isla Cachagua Natural Monument.
Their work goes far beyond surveillance. Their duties include species monitoring, ecosystem protection, environmental education, visitor control, support for research, maintenance of the areas, and threat prevention.
"They are the ones who are day by day in the field, safeguarding our protected wild areas, educating those who visit them, and facing the different threats that can affect their ecosystems and biodiversity," highlighted Regional Minister Nicolás Prado.
The commemoration seeks to value work that is carried out directly in contact with nature and that is fundamental for conserving the ecosystems and the country's natural and cultural heritage.
National Park Rangers Day was officially established through Supreme Decree No. 255 of the Ministry of Agriculture, as recognition of the work of those who dedicate their labor to the protection of Chile's natural areas.
