The Municipality of Puerto Varas and the Regional Directorate of Conaf Los Lagos signed a collaboration agreement to strengthen the prevention and early detection of forest fires through the installation of three surveillance cameras with artificial intelligence.

The devices were installed in the sector of La Cruz, at the summit of Cerro Philippi, one of the highest urban points in the commune. The structures reach 30 meters in height and have coverage of more than 25 kilometers, allowing broad areas of the territory to be monitored and information to be transmitted directly to Conaf's Regional Forest Fire Center.

The mayor of Puerto Varas, Tomás Gárate, highlighted that this technology will make it possible to improve surveillance capacity and anticipate possible emergencies. According to his explanation, the strategic location of the cameras will facilitate a broad view of the commune and will help reinforce prevention measures.

For his part, the regional director of Conaf Los Lagos, Fernando Gebhard, emphasized the importance of timely detection of the first signs of fire. The authority stated that having early and accurate information is essential to coordinate a rapid response and carry out the first combat actions.

The incorporation of these systems represents progress in the use of technology for the prevention of forest fires in the Los Lagos Region, by strengthening monitoring capacities and helping to reduce response times to possible fires.
