The push for wood construction in Biobío could translate into new works within five or six years, according to Juan Becerra Brüggink, head of the technical department of Arauco's wood construction area, who linked that projection to the initiatives that began to take shape in the region last year.
The professional addressed the possibilities of developing infrastructure with this material and took as a reference what happened in La Araucanía, where he linked the execution of educational establishments and sports venues to work that began a decade earlier.
THE PUSH FOR WOOD CONSTRUCTION IN BIOBÍO
In an interview with Diario La Tribuna, conducted during the visit to the HILAM plant in Cholguán, within the framework of the Technological Tour of the National Center of Excellence for the Wood Industry (Cenamad) on Tuesday, September 29, Becerra analyzed the prospects for this type of building.
When responding about the opportunities for the province and its surroundings, the specialist highlighted a regional initiative that began to take shape last year, led by Frane Zilic, and linked its possible results to the continuity of that work.
"The results of what is being developed today, with the push from the College of Architects, of Engineers and the Chilean Chamber of Construction of Los Ángeles, we will see in five or six more years," he said.
The professional linked that timeframe to the processes required by public sector decisions, from the first coordination efforts to the execution of works.
"Therefore, that is how this mechanism moves to promote the construction mainly of public establishments, schools, gymnasiums, sports complexes. So we have to be patient," he expressed.
Becerra also addressed the preparation of components before their transfer to reduce on-site work. At the facility located in the commune of Yungay, Ñuble Region, laminated beams and cross-laminated panels, known as CLT, are manufactured.
The latter can come out with door and window openings already made, according to the requirements of each design. As an example, he mentioned a 240-square-meter home whose assembly can be carried out in six days, a timeframe corresponding to the assembly of the structure.
To achieve those times, he explained that the design must be resolved beforehand and the teams of professionals participating in the project must be coordinated.
"This is not only manufacturing, but there is important detail engineering behind it," he explained.
LA ARAUCANÍA AS A REFERENCE EXPERIENCE
To illustrate the path Biobío can follow, the professional recalled a definition adopted approximately ten years ago in a neighboring region, where different actors agreed to promote the use of this resource in building.
"The Ministry of Public Works, through the Directorate of Architecture, declared La Araucanía as the capital of wood construction," he recounted.
According to his explanation, that push brought together the state sector, the Chilean Chamber of Construction, universities and organizations in the sector. Becerra linked that coordination to commissions that were later executed by the company.
Among the examples, he mentioned sports venues in Loncoche, Villarrica and Pucón, as well as educational establishments in Vilcún and Pailahueque. He presented them as part of a process whose realization required continuity.
"It is the fruit of what was developed ten years ago. So that you understand that public policies are always slower, it is not immediate," he indicated.
From that experience, Becerra stated that it serves as a reference for Biobío, where coordination among public agencies, trade associations and professionals can open new opportunities to incorporate local production into projects within the region.
