"There is no abandonment or improvisation here," stated Defense Minister Fernando Barros, addressing concerns from various sectors about a potential de-escalation or reduced military presence in the Southern Macrozone; which some fear could reactivate outbreaks of violence in this area of the country.

The Constitutional State of Emergency in the Southern Macrozone has been in effect continuously since May 2022, encompassing the entire La Araucanía Region and the provinces of Arauco and Biobío in the Biobío Region.

Faced with fears from various guilds in the southern part of the country about an alleged reduction of this measure, Barros was categorical: "We are not abandoning anything, nor are we immediately ending the State of Emergency. For over four years, the Armed Forces have supported Carabineros and the PDI in protecting citizens and critical infrastructure. That deployment has been key, but now it is time to take the next step."

"We are entering a stage of active development: compliance with judicial rulings, strengthening of the civilian police forces, and greater operational capacity of the State. The priority is to first reinforce Carabineros and the PDI, reposition them in the territory, and restore the effective presence of the State where it should be (...) Those who expect concrete results in ending violence and recovering public order will not be disappointed," added the Secretary of State in statements to "El Mercurio."

Barros had previously expressed in Congress the possibility of reducing the presence of military personnel in the south of the country, in order to adopt actions that contribute to a return to normality, while simultaneously strengthening the police forces. This is in the context of a progressive decrease in violent incidents in the area and a series of arrests of leaders of criminal organizations.
