After the Coordinadora Arauco Malleco (CAM) claimed the psychologist Álvaro Quinchinao as a weichafe, who died in a failed attack on a rural road in the La Araucanía region, local unions and politicians stated that a different line of investigation has opened, and that an anti-terrorist team needs to be formed in the Southern Macrozone.

The president of the Multigremial de La Araucanía, Patricio Santibáñez, pointed out that the investigation opened a different angle to determine who makes up the armed groups carrying out attacks in the Southern Macrozone.

"This is new evidence; that people with a certain level of education, who lead seemingly normal lives and work in institutions probably funded by the State, are dedicated to terrorism," he stated.

Adding that "this reinforces the need for an investigative unit whose main objective is the dismantling of terrorist groups."

Deputy and member of the National Libertarian Party (PNL), Gloria Naveillán, stated that this is not the only case of a person working in public services with ties to armed groups.

The legislator recalled that in 2021, a Judicial Branch employee was arrested after being found with war weapons and ammunition in Traiguén. The deputy indicated that the Prosecutor's Office must conduct a thorough investigation.

"The psychologist who worked at the Makewe Hospital, who was run over by a truck during an attempted attack and whom the CAM claimed as a weichafe, is not the only one of these individuals we know worked in public services," she accused.

"A huge angle opens up for the Public Ministry to start investigating which individuals are working in public services with access to information - which is the most serious part - and who ultimately belong to these radical groups," the parliamentarian stated.

In the provinces of Malleco and Cautín, all alert levels were raised and surveillance increased, including the deployment of aircraft and night flights, as part of a prevention strategy and also to respond if attacks occur.

Álvaro Quinchinao lived in a Mapuche community and was the psychologist in charge of the Mental Health Program at the Makewe Intercultural Hospital, in the commune of Padre Las Casas.

The CAM, through a statement, claimed him as a weichafe and acknowledged that when he died after being run over last Tuesday night by a forestry truck, he was engaged in an action of resistance and sabotage against the forestry industry.
