The Government announced a tougher legal offensive in response to the arson attack that affected the forestry company Safco in Collipulli, where unknown individuals burned four vehicles during the early hours of Thursday.
The Undersecretary of Public Security, Andrés Jouannet, confirmed that the Anti-Terrorism Law will be used to prosecute those responsible. After participating in a security committee in La Araucanía and meeting with the affected family, he was categorical: “We are going to pursue these criminals, these terrorists. This has no other name than terrorism, and that is why we have filed charges.”
Jouannet described the attack as “a despicable action against a family, against workers, against people who even have a disability and who have been left without their truck. It is an action that threatens people’s lives.”
Ongoing judicial process
The Regional Secretary of Security of La Araucanía, Luis Calderón, detailed that the charges will be filed with a terrorist character, although he specified that it will be submitted once the Public Prosecutor’s Office provides all the background information on the ongoing investigations.
In this way, the Executive seeks to set a precedent in the prosecution of rural violence crimes, reinforcing the security strategy in the Southern Macrozone and sending a signal of support to families and workers affected by such incidents.
