An illegally set up camp inside La Campana National Park was dismantled during a joint operation carried out by park rangers from the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf) and specialized personnel from the Forestry and Ecological Section OS5 of Carabineros.

The procedure took place in the Palmas de Ocoa sector, in the commune of Hijuelas, where inspection teams detected a series of environmental infractions associated with the illegal occupation of the protected area.

During the inspection, officials confirmed the unauthorized logging of native preservation forest, as well as evidence of illicit use of fire near the camp, situations that pose a threat to ecosystem conservation and are prohibited by current legislation.

The regional director of Conaf, Sandro Bruzzone, stated that this type of intervention is key to protecting natural spaces and preventing large-scale environmental damage.

The authority warned that the presence of irregular settlements within protected areas implies risks both for the environment and for those who occupy them, especially due to the possibility of causing forest fires or affecting protected species.

Meanwhile, the regional head of Conaf's Protected Areas Department, Marcelo Pérez, described the events as particularly serious, highlighting that the illegal use of fire could have triggered a large-scale emergency.

The background information was made available to the Local Prosecutor's Office of La Calera through Carabineros, in order to determine potential responsibilities and possible sanctions arising from the detected events.

Conaf recalled that together with Carabineros, they maintain permanent preventive patrols in protected wilderness areas of the Valparaíso region, both day and night, with the aim of preventing environmental crimes and safeguarding natural heritage.
