With the aim of strengthening the coordination of security operations in the Southern Macrozone, Army Brigadier General José Soto Escala officially assumed the leadership of the National Defense for the entire territory that remains under the Constitutional State of Emergency Exception.
The measure implies the unification of military command in the La Araucanía Region and in the provinces of Arauco and Biobío, consolidating a single command structure for the tasks carried out by the Armed Forces in support of public security.
The appointment was established by Supreme Decree No. 81, signed on May 25, 2026, and came into effect on June 20. According to the National Defense Headquarters, the new organization seeks to optimize the planning and execution of operations deployed in the area, allowing for more integrated command and better use of available resources.
The institution stated that the new scheme will strengthen coordination between the different branches of the Armed Forces and the agencies involved in protection and control tasks, maintaining a common strategic vision for the entire territory under the State of Exception.
The decision had been announced during a coordination meeting of the Araucanía-Biobío Macrozone. On that occasion, the regional presidential delegate of Biobío, Julio Anativia, indicated that the modification responds to a change in the command structure, without altering the existing operational deployment on the ground.
Likewise, it was confirmed that joint work with the Navy will continue for surveillance and protection tasks of the coastline, complementing the security actions carried out in different points of the Southern Macrozone.
Authorities hope that this new structure will help improve the coordination of efforts aimed at addressing the security challenges present in the area, strengthening response capacity and the protection of the population.
