Unemployment in the Bío Bío region stood at 9.8% during the moving quarter of March-May, making it one of the areas with the highest levels of joblessness, exceeding the national average of 9.4%.

The manager of the Association of Forestry Contractors, René Muñoz, hopes that authorities will take action on the matter, as the forestry sector has seen layoffs and terminations in recent months, including permanent staff as well as contractors providing services.

The Employment Defense Council called on authorities to seek solutions, this on the eve of the visit by the Ministers of Economy, Daniel Mas, and Labor, Tomás Rau.

At the same time, the region is among those that contribute the least to the national Gross Domestic Product, even recording a decrease according to the latest Central Bank report, at 5.3%.

Now, according to the latest INE report, Bío Bío remained at 9.8% unemployment in the last moving quarter of March-May, placing it among the regions with the highest joblessness.

Iván Montes, spokesperson for the Employment Defense Council in Bío Bío, believes that these figures confirm that the region remains stagnant and that sectors such as fishing and forestry are at greatest risk with the current drivers of the regional economy.

Female unemployment also exceeds 11.5% in the Bío Bío region, which worries workers' unions, especially regarding the measures they hope authorities will implement, just on the eve of the visit to the area by the Ministers of Labor, Tomás Rau, and Economy, Daniel Mas.
