A flagrant procedure carried out during the afternoon of this past Wednesday allowed detectives from the Robbery Investigation Brigade (BIRO) Angol to detain three people for the crime of timber theft, after being caught in the vicinity of a forest property located in the Tolpán sector, Renaico commune.
The operation began after police became aware, through the Security Chief of a forestry company, of the theft of timber from a plot of land where eucalyptus trees stood.
As part of the initial inquiries, using images obtained from the air, detectives detected the presence of individuals moving in three pickup trucks who would be linked to the extraction and subsequent transport of the timber.
With this information, police officers moved to the location, where they managed to carry out the flagrant arrest of three men, who were located near the forest estate.
During the procedure, detectives seized three vehicles allegedly used in the commission of the offense: a Toyota Hilux, a SsangYong Actyon Sport, and a Nissan Terrano.
Added to this was the seizure of two chainsaws, corresponding to the brands Stihl and Husqvarna, tools that would have been used to cut down the trees.
In parallel, officers from the Investigative Police managed to recover approximately nine cubic meters of eucalyptus timber, a species which, in accordance with instructions issued by the Public Prosecutor's Office, was subsequently handed over to representatives of the affected company. The total value of the seized species and items amounts to $15,600,000.
The head of the Robbery Investigation Brigade Angol, Subprefect Cristian Gueda Morales, explained that the procedure is being carried out within the framework of the CROM strategy, promoted by the National Headquarters for Crimes Against Property (JENACROF), aimed at strengthening coordinated work between police units and the various actors involved in the public and private security ecosystem.
In this context, he noted that BIRO Angol has maintained for several weeks focused inquiries to gather and analyze criminal information, detect criminal patterns, and identify individuals and possible organized structures linked to the theft and illegal commercialization of timber.
According to the police chief, this type of offense constitutes an activity that can be carried out on a permanent basis and generate significant profits for those involved, which is why investigations seek to establish possible links and responsibilities beyond flagrant cases.
The three detainees were placed at the disposal of the Angol Guarantee Court, in accordance with the instructions given by the Flagrancy and Initial Proceedings prosecutor.
Meanwhile, the Public Prosecutor's Office ordered the transfer of the three vehicles to impound lots and the chainsaws to the facilities of the Angol Prosecutor's Office, with the aim of continuing with the corresponding proceedings.
