A procedure carried out by the Investigative Police ended with two people arrested for their alleged involvement in the illegal extraction of timber from lands linked to Alerce Costero National Park, in the commune of Corral, Los Ríos Region.
The operation was carried out by detectives from the Investigative Brigade of Environmental Crimes and Cultural Heritage (Bidema) of the PDI Valdivia, along with the SUMA team, who caught those involved while carrying out logging activities in the Chaihuín sector.
The investigation, coordinated with the Public Prosecutor's Office, began based on information indicating the individuals' repeated entry into the area to cut eucalyptus trees. The timber was subsequently gathered and transported to Corral using a vehicle adapted for its transport.
The information gathered by investigators indicates that the operations would have been carried out without the corresponding authorizations. The situation was also verified on site by administrators of the protected area.
During the operation, the PDI seized a blue Chevrolet Luv pickup truck, a Stihl brand chainsaw, and approximately three cubic meters of already cut eucalyptus timber.
According to the estimate made during the procedure, the value of the seized species and items reaches $3,265,000.
Those arrested are two adult men, of Chilean nationality and with no criminal record. Both were placed at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor's Office and subsequently of the courts, where they must face the corresponding judicial process for their alleged responsibility in the crime of timber theft.
The investigation also seeks to determine the scope of the activities carried out and establish whether there are other related antecedents concerning the extraction of forest resources in the sector.
