In the context of the forest fires affecting the south-central zone of the country, the manager of the Association of Forestry Contractors (Acoforag), René Muñoz, pointed to human action as a key factor in the origin of the disasters and questioned the lack of preventive measures by the State.
The leader maintained that these events are not accidental and did not rule out intentionality.
"Forests don't burn by themselves, there is someone's action that sets them on fire and produces a fire," he told The Clinic, referring to emergencies that develop under extreme weather conditions.
Muñoz warned that the country is facing highly complex fires, even "sixth-generation" ones, which become impossible to control once started.
"It's an uncontrollable fire"
"With the weather condition that generated this fire, it is an uncontrollable fire," he stated, downplaying the effectiveness of firebreaks or interface zones.
He also criticized the absence of structural changes after previous episodes. "Since 2017 we have had these catastrophic fires (...) and we have learned nothing," he said, alluding to emergencies that occurred in 2023 and the Viña del Mar fire in 2024.
Finally, he called for strengthening prevention and criminal prosecution. "Burning, destroying, and causing deaths cannot be free," he asserted, along with requesting public policies that allow anticipation of this type of catastrophe.
