Agricultural Emergency Declared in Ñuble and Biobío Following Forest Fires

In response to the devastating forest fires that have ravaged the regions of Ñuble and Biobío, the Government has declared an agricultural emergency across the entire region. The Minister of Agriculture, Ignacia Fernández, along with other authorities, announced a series of support measures aimed at affected peasant and indigenous families.

The delivery of materials to rebuild perimeter fences and the provision of animal and beekeeping feed are just the first steps of a broader aid plan that seeks to restore productive infrastructure and the well-being of rural communities.

The agricultural emergency declared by the Ministry of Agriculture translates into the immediate delivery of aid to 10 peasant families who have lost vital infrastructure for their productive activities. "Today we have declared an agricultural emergency in the Ñuble Region. Within this framework, we are delivering concrete support to 10 peasant families who lost their fences and suffered other productive damage," stated Minister Fernández.

The national director of Indap, Santiago Rojas, detailed that the aid consists of construction kits including posts, wire, and staples, essential for rebuilding fences and protecting animals. Furthermore, the delivery of forage and financial support for infrastructure and beekeeping has been planned, with a contribution valued at up to $250,000 per affected person.

Comprehensive Support Plan

The Early Assistance Committee (CAT), established by the Government, has defined a support plan that includes short and medium-term measures. "In the medium term, we expect to come with other aids and adapt Indap's programs so that people who have been harmed and affected can get back on their feet and recover their productive activity," added Fernández.

The latest report from Indap identifies 214 farmers accredited with the institution who have been affected in the regions of Ñuble, Biobío, and La Araucanía, with a compromised area of over 58 thousand hectares. The magnitude of the catastrophe underscores the importance of the announced measures and the need for a rapid and effective response to support the recovery of rural communities.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Indap reaffirm their commitment to peasant and indigenous family farming, recognizing the importance of their livelihood and contribution to rural development. The authorities will continue to monitor the situation and deploy the necessary aid to ensure that affected families can resume their activities and rebuild their lives after the fires.
