Fifth-year Forestry Engineering students from the University of Aysén participated in a training session on the Environmental Impact Assessment System (SEIA), taught by professionals from the Environmental Assessment Service (SEA) of the Aysén region.
The activity took place at the SEA Aysén facilities and marked the third consecutive year in which the agency has held this training instance aimed at future professionals in the forestry field. The session also included the participation of students from other cohorts and the remote attendance of the professor in charge of the "Environmental Impact Assessment" course.
During the training, participants covered content related to the Chilean environmental institutional framework, the operation of the SEIA, and the powers of the SEA in assessment processes. The participation of citizens and of the State Administration Bodies with Environmental Competence (OAECA) in these instances was also reviewed.
Training for sustainable management
Representatives from SEA Aysén highlighted the importance of bringing these contents closer to students, considering the role that future forestry engineers will play in the management of the region's ecosystems.
Carlos González Tereucan, acting regional director of SEA Aysén, stated that the initiative seeks to contribute to the professional training of students and provide tools related to environmental assessment.
"We hope to contribute to their professional training, which among other aspects is oriented toward the sustainable management of the region's forest ecosystems," he said.
The instance allowed students to learn directly about the work carried out by the SEA and to understand the role of the different actors involved in the environmental assessment of projects, thereby strengthening their preparation for professional practice.
