The Los Lagos Region presented its wildfire protection strategy for the 2026-2027 season, with a deployment of 22 brigades, three helicopters, two mechanized resources and two tanker trucks. The operation involves nearly 280 people dedicated to fire prevention and combat efforts in the four provinces.
The program, led by CONAF, includes prevention plans in all 30 communes of the region, with eight priority territories based on their risk levels and fire occurrence. It also seeks to strengthen the protection of wildland-urban interface areas, where the proximity between homes and vegetation increases the exposure of communities.
During the presentation, authorities highlighted the results of the 2025-2026 season, when 170 wildfires were recorded, 44% fewer than the previous period. The affected area also decreased by 70%, results they seek to maintain through greater institutional coordination, territorial planning and citizen participation.
The strategy also incorporates the Incident Command System to improve joint work among CONAF, SENAPRED, Firefighters, municipalities and companies. Among the initiatives, seven drones, tools for communities and projects to strengthen infrastructure and operational capacity are considered.
Authorities called for avoiding unauthorized burns, poorly extinguished campfires and other risky behaviors. The goal is to anticipate emergencies and protect people, homes and the natural heritage of the Los Lagos Region.
