The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) renewed for four years the recognition of the Unesco Chair in Surface Hydrology of the University of Talca, highlighting its contribution to scientific research, water resource management and the development of public policies related to water and the environment.
The initiative, created in 2017 with the support of the University of Chile, conducts research and promotes scientific cooperation with national and international institutions. Among its main lines of work are climate change, the impact of floods, aquifer recharge and forest hydrology, as well as proposals to improve rainwater harvesting and the prevention of extreme hydrometeorological events.
International recognition
The director of the Chair, Roberto Pizarro, valued the renewal as a recognition of the work carried out in research, teaching, dissemination of knowledge and the generation of collaboration networks in the Americas and Europe.
The initiative maintains links with universities in the United States, such as the University of Arizona and Colorado School of Mines. Unesco also highlighted its capacity to connect hydrological research with the concrete challenges of the territories.
With this renewal, the University of Talca, the University of Chile and the collaborating institutions plan to strengthen interdisciplinary research and provide scientific solutions to the challenges of water management and climate uncertainty.
