This Thursday, the Oral Criminal Court of Cañete imposed one of the most severe penalties in the Chilean penal system by sentencing brothers Felipe, Tomás, and Jefferson Antihuén Santi to qualified life imprisonment for their responsibility in the triple homicide of Carabineros de Chile officers, which occurred in April 2024 in the Biobío Region.

The court ruling marks a milestone in one of the most shocking cases in recent years in the so-called Southern Macrozone, both due to the severity of the events and the public outcry it generated.

A crime that shocked the country

According to the facts established during the trial, the victims—Carlos Cisterna Navarro, Sergio Arévalo Lobos, and Misael Vidal Cid—were murdered on the night of April 26, 2024, in the commune of Cañete.

After the attack, the perpetrators set fire to the institutional vehicle in which the officers were traveling in an attempt to conceal the crime. The brutality of the act triggered a strong nationwide reaction and reopened the debate on security in the area.

Sentences and responsibilities

Alongside the main conviction, the court also sentenced Nicolás Rivas Paillao to 17 years in prison as a collaborator, as his involvement was proven through the facilitation of a weapon used during the commission of the crime.

The qualified life sentence imposed on the three brothers means they will not be eligible for any penitentiary benefits before serving a minimum of 40 years deprived of liberty, making it one of the strictest penalties contemplated under Chilean legislation.

This process seeks to determine the full extent of criminal responsibilities linked to one of the most serious crimes recorded in the region in recent years.

A ruling with an impact on the security agenda

The conviction occurs in a context where security in the Biobío Region and the Southern Macrozone remains one of the country's primary concerns.

The case has been considered emblematic by authorities, not only due to the violence involved but also because of the challenge it poses for the state in terms of criminal prosecution and the protection of law enforcement personnel.

With this sentence, the judicial system sends a clear signal regarding the severity of crimes committed against police officers and reaffirms the application of the maximum penalties available under Chilean legislation for acts of this nature.
