The president of the National Federation of Forestry Cargo Workers (Fetracarfor), Alejandro Jara, expressed his deep discomfort following the failed meeting requested under the Lobby Law with the presidential delegate and the regional Labor Secretary in the Los Ríos Region.

The meeting aimed to address safety measures for drivers and contingency plans in response to rising fuel prices.

According to information obtained by Diario de Valdivia, Jara described the situation as a worrying sign for the sector.

"For us, it is unacceptable that the top regional authorities withdraw from having conversations with workers," stated the union leader, questioning what the work directive will be for the newly appointed authorities.

Likewise, he told our outlet that the sectoral authorities did not provide further details about the cancellation of the meeting.

"They didn't give further explanations; our feeling is that they had no intention of meeting with the workers," added Alejandro Jara.

Next steps

The union representative emphasized that the federation has been a fundamental contribution to various governments in matters of road and labor safety. In this regard, he recalled that the validity of the Constitutional State of Exception in the macrozones was the result of pressure exerted by his organization to protect forestry drivers and the general population.

"It strikes us as very strange that we couldn't have held this meeting, given the importance of safety for workers," Jara pointed out.

Following this episode, the organization confirmed that it will escalate the request to the Ministry of the Interior to seek guarantees on how regional conversations with the labor sector will be conducted.
