This May 17 marks four years since the uninterrupted implementation of the constitutional state of exception in the southern macrozone, a measure that remains in effect in regions affected by acts of violence and attacks in rural areas.
Faced with this new anniversary, deputies from the Party of the People, Lilian Betancurt and Flor Contreras, called on the Government to strengthen the state's presence in the area and advance in fundamental solutions for families living in the territory.
THEY DEMAND THAT THE STATE OF EXCEPTION NOT BECOME "NORMALITY"
Deputy Flor Contreras warned that she will not support a new extension if the Executive does not present a comprehensive security plan. "If the Government does not present a comprehensive security plan for the area, with more police staffing, intelligence, and concrete measures, I will not approve a new state of exception. Citizens need results and not to keep extending a measure without a clear strategy," she stated.
For her part, Deputy Lilian Betancurt noted that the state of exception "came to protect citizens," but questioned that it has become a permanent normality. "Clearly, the presence of the police has been effective, but it has also highlighted the lack of the Chilean state in providing guarantees and support to families living in the area. Our call is for this to be resolved through dialogue, but also with a present state," she affirmed.
Both parliamentarians maintain that security must be accompanied by investment, social support, and a permanent strategy to restore peace to the inhabitants of the southern macrozone.
