Chile reached a significant international recognition in environmental conservation, after protection initiatives for Darwin's Frog and the Highland Flamingos received the highest distinction in Colombia, within the framework of the 32nd annual Congress of the Latin American Association ALPZA.
This is the most important regional event for conservation and biodiversity experts, whose edition was held at Parque Jaime Duque.
The distinguished programs meet rigorous criteria in areas such as scientific research, species rescue, sustainability, and environmental education.
Chile an example: Darwin's Frog and Highland Flamingo
One of the awarded projects corresponds to the work with the highland flamingo, for the Andean, James, and Chilean species, coordinated by the National Zoo of Chile (Parquemet) together with the MERI Foundation and the AZA SAFE program. The initiative was especially valued for the application of satellite tracking technologies in the north of the country.
In parallel, the program dedicated to Darwin's Frog, also promoted by Parquemet, obtained its certification thanks to its field monitoring strategies and the implementation of protection plans in Patagonia, developed in collaboration with the NGO Ranita de Darwin.
Let us recall that the protection of this species was almost threatened after, one day into his term, President Kast withdrew the Comptroller's decree that guaranteed the conservation of this endangered animal. However, after 48 hours it was re-submitted.
According to the evaluation committee, one of the key aspects for granting this seal was the collaborative work model between public and private institutions, as well as the active participation of local communities.
