The mayors of Quilaco and Mulchén, in the southern macrozone, expressed their concern over the crisis affecting the forestry sector and called on the Government to promote a public-private alliance to address unemployment in the area.
The authorities warned that layoffs in the sector are directly impacting hundreds of families in the Biobío Province, especially contractors and small entrepreneurs linked to forestry activity.
The mayor of Quilaco and president of Amcordi, Pablo Urrutia, pointed out that the situation requires coordination between the State and the private sector to prevent further job losses.
"Today we have learned about the number of people being laid off by various forestry groups. It worries us because attacks are adding up. We need to do collaborative work to help and get them back on their feet," he stated.
Along the same lines, the mayor of Mulchén, José Miguel Muñoz, argued that the crisis is not only economic but also social, due to the impact on families in the commune.
"The crisis among forestry contractors translates into hundreds of families who today lose their livelihood due to unemployment," he warned. The community leader also called for urgent measures such as protection of operations and subsidies to reactivate employment in the area.
