The Municipality of Valdivia announced that it is analyzing the filing of legal action to determine potential responsibilities for damages recorded in the Llancahue Nature Sanctuary, following a procedure by the Investigations Police that ended with the arrest of a man linked to the alleged theft of native timber from this protected area.

The operation took place in the Lomas del Sol sector, specifically on the El Huape property, where detectives caught the suspect loading native timber onto a truck. According to the investigation's findings, the material would have been obtained through the felling of specimens located inside the sanctuary.

The municipality condemned the events and highlighted the environmental importance of Llancahue, particularly for its contribution as a water reserve for the commune. The head of the Department of Environment, Carolina Jara, stated that the Legal Advisory Directorate is gathering background information to evaluate the corresponding legal actions, also recalling that last year a complaint had already been filed for events of similar characteristics.

During the procedure, the PDI seized a JAC truck, a chainsaw, and four meters of native coihue timber. Additionally, the detectives confirmed the felling of two ulmo trees approximately 15 meters in length each. According to the police, the valuation of the usurpation, the damages caused, and the recovered timber amounts to $28.3 million.

The municipality, meanwhile, valued the police work and assured that it will continue coordinating actions with different institutions to reinforce the protection and safeguarding of this important natural heritage of Valdivia.
