Five individuals were sentenced to 12 years in prison after the justice system found them guilty of the homicide of community member Manuel Huenupil, a crime that occurred in October 2022 in the commune of Carahue – La Araucanía region – and which falls within the context of rural violence.
In this case, the Prosecutor's Office had accused 8 people. They are Heraldo Norín, Jean Carlos Sáez, Jerson Sáez, Jhony Huenupil, Gonzalo Antío, Javier Mariñan, César Opazo, and Francisco Pérez. The Public Ministry attributed to them participation in the murder as well as other crimes related to weapons law.
The records establish that on May 5, 2022, a group of hooded individuals linked to the Mapuche armed group Weichan Auka Mapu (WAM) shot Manuel Huenupil in the back following a dispute at the La Suerte estate in the rural area of Carahue.
After the oral trial that lasted a month, the judges acquitted three of the accused of the homicide charge and weapons law violations. Judge Roberto Herrera provided details during the reading of the sentence.
The other 5 accused were sentenced to 12 years in prison, with effective imprisonment for the crime of homicide. An additional 4 years were added for the consummated crime of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Regarding César Opazo, the Oral Criminal Court of Temuco sentenced him to 4 years in prison for illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition, a crime committed on September 12, 2024. However, in this case, he was granted the benefit of intensive supervised release.
