With the aim of strengthening preservation and monitoring measures for the huemul through public-private work in the mountain ecosystems of the country's south-central zone, the monitoring group of the RECOGE Huemul Plan, led by the regional teams of the National Forestry Corporation (CONAF) and the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Service (SBAP) of Ñuble, held a key interinstitutional working session.
At the technical meeting, the goals achieved during 2026 were reviewed, along with the update of the Governance Regulation, the appointment of new coordinations, and the design of the strategic planning projected for 2027. The initiative is especially relevant given the orderly transition of this instrument from CONAF to SBAP, through the Change Management Board within the framework of Law No. 21,600.
In this regard, the director of CONAF Ñuble, Domingo González Zúñiga, highlighted the value of the efforts for the conservation of this emblematic species in the territory, stating that "for our institution, the RECOGE Huemul Plan represents a historic commitment to safeguarding mountain biodiversity. We have observed good progress based on the interinstitutional work carried out by the technical teams, and we will continue contributing with all our experience and dedication to ensure that conservation strategies maintain their operational continuity, efficiently protecting native wildlife."
For his part, the acting director of SBAP Ñuble, Nicolás Gatica Cárdenas, emphasized the relevance of the new institutional challenges in conservation matters. "Having strategic planning that is already thinking about 2027 allows us to give technical structure to the safeguarding of the huemul and strengthen the future administration of protected areas as core conservation zones for the species. Instances such as this Monitoring Group consolidate a solid foundation so that regional biodiversity management is participatory, transparent, and of a high conservation standard."
The session concluded with the setting of upcoming dates for the technical working groups, focused on strengthening oversight channels, prioritizing conservation actions, and environmental education campaigns aimed at the communities present in the territory of the Nevados de Chillán – Laguna del Laja Biological Corridor Biodiversity Reserve, in the mountain zone of the Ñuble and Biobío regions.
