The National Forestry Corporation (Conaf) identified more than 600 critical forest fire hotspots in the La Araucanía Region, as part of an analysis aimed at strengthening preventive actions ahead of the upcoming higher-risk season.

The study determined that eight communes present high and very high risk levels: Angol, Collipulli, Temuco, Victoria, Carahue, Padre Las Casas, Galvarino and Lumaco. The findings were delivered to the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred) and to the municipal Risk Management units, in order to coordinate prevention measures.

The regional director of Conaf, Héctor Tillería, explained that the identified hotspots correspond mainly to sectors with a high occurrence of fires and conditions favorable for their spread, due to the accumulation of vegetation that acts as fuel.

As he detailed, a large part of the areas of greatest concern is located in wildland-urban interface areas, where vegetation coexists with homes and infrastructure, increasing the exposure of communities to potential emergencies.

In Temuco, the identified sectors include the surroundings of the Cautín River, the upper and riverside areas of Labranza, and Cerro Ñielol. These findings will make it possible to focus preventive efforts and strengthen coordination between public agencies and the municipalities.
