Under the motto "One tree, a thousand possibilities," the Faculty of Forestry Sciences of the University of Concepción held a new edition of its traditional native tree delivery, consolidating this milestone as the largest community urban reforestation effort in Chile.
The activity, framed within the commemoration of Forestry Engineer Day, was attended by the rector of the University of Concepción, Dr. Carlos Saavedra, the dean of Forestry Sciences, Dr. Eugenio Sanfuentes Von Stowasser, the vice-rector for Community Engagement at UdeC, Dr. Ximena Gauché, among other academic authorities, along with representatives from the public and private sectors.
This initiative, promoted since 2011 by former dean Manuel Sánchez, has grown over the years. In this edition, for the first time, the event is part of Forestry Sciences Week, bringing together the faculty's three majors: Forestry Engineering, Plant Biotechnology Engineering, and Natural Resources Conservation Engineering. This synergy allowed for the delivery of specimens such as quillay, peumo, araucaria, and oak; it also marks the start of a territorial engagement project that includes creating mini-forests in local educational institutions, strengthening the Community Engagement axis of UdeC's Institutional Strategic Plan.
Dr. Eugenio Sanfuentes explained that "today we are launching our new campaign 'A mini-forest in my school,' which will begin with the collaborative work we will carry out in the school project 'Reverdeciendo Lirquén' at the Almirante Patricio Lynch School." To this end, the necessary technical advice will be provided for planting native trees, so that current and future generations learn about the invaluable worth of species and nature.
Additionally, a formative collaboration begins with the Concepción/Hualpén Headquarters Group of the Carabineros de Chile Training School.
Finally, the great novelty of this event was the implementation of a tracking and geolocation system for the delivered species. After receiving technical information on tree care, attendees were invited to record the exact planting point. This tool will allow the Faculty to monitor the impact of the "urban forest" that the community is helping to build, transforming a traditional donation into a long-term citizen commitment project. The goal is to help each specimen grow successfully, adding value to various climate change mitigation strategies.
Dean Sanfuentes especially highlighted the role of volunteer and postgraduate students, emphasizing that environmental care is a collective task. "With this activity, the University of Concepción reaffirms its commitment to training leaders capable of connecting academic knowledge with the urgent needs of the community and its natural environment."
The success of the event was made possible by a robust collaboration network that included entities such as VRIM UdeC, the faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Architecture, Cicat, and Campus Naturaleza, as well as organizations like Conaf, SAG, Infor, Buena Cabra, and companies such as Arauco, CMPC, and Celeo, among others.
