The University of Concepción concluded the 2025-2026 wildfire prevention season with a milestone: surpassing 1,500 days without emergencies at the Concepción campus and external properties in Biobío and Ñuble.
The program, led by the Directorate of Services and supported by the Vice-Rectorate for Economic and Administrative Affairs, was based on anticipation, continuous monitoring, and collaborative work with public agencies, neighborhood groups, and the university community.
Action pillars
- Prevention: reduction of over 400,000 m² of vegetative fuel and use of the Goat Brigade on 22,500 m².
- Mitigation: 1,100 preventive patrols (300 aerial with drone and 800 ground-based) and 58 control procedures.
- Technology: robotic cameras that detected 202 hotspots on properties and surrounding areas, alerting according to protocols.
Institutional coordination
The head of Properties and Forest Management, Juan Emilio Espinoza, highlighted the 13 collaborative activities with the Municipality of Concepción, Carabineros, Conaf, Firefighters, and Senapred.
Four fire situations were promptly controlled, preventing spread. Additionally, training and drills were conducted to strengthen team preparedness.
The Director of Services, Evelyn Vásquez, emphasized that the plan responds to the challenges of climate change and the need for institutional safety: "The implementation of the plan has been an example of coordination and has brought visibility to the normally quiet work of our Directorate of Services."
Preventive culture
The University reiterated its call to the community to remain alert and collaborate in protecting the forests, even during lower-risk seasons.
With these actions, UdeC consolidates sustained preventive management, aligned with its Institutional Strategic Plan and the guidelines of sustainability and risk management.
