Personnel from the Carabineros Sub-station of San José de la Mariquina carried out the arrest of two individuals accused of participating in a wood theft crime, in a procedure that falls within the preventive patrol duties that the institution performs in the commune.

According to information provided by Carabineros of the Los Ríos Region through their official channels, the police action originated while officers were conducting surveillance rounds in rural areas of the commune. In this context, they detected the presence of two subjects who were extracting wood without authorization, using tools and elements intended to commit the illegal act.

During the operation, not only were the involved individuals arrested, but also the implements used in the illegal activity were seized, which remained under police custody as part of the investigation. The stolen wood was likewise recovered and made available for the corresponding proceedings.

Regional context

Wood theft has been identified in the Los Ríos Region and in other areas of southern Chile as a recurring problem affecting both forestry companies and small landowners. Authorities have reinforced patrols and checks on secondary roads and forest properties, with the aim of preventing this type of crime, which generates economic losses and, on occasion, is linked to informal marketing networks.

The two detainees were transferred to the police unit and subsequently placed at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor's Office, which must carry out the respective detention control and define the precautionary measures or potential charges to be brought against them. The investigation seeks to clarify the magnitude of the crime and determine if there are more individuals involved.
